Trade War Escalation? Foreign Media: Trump May Announce "Reciprocal Tariffs" Next Week

According to reports from the American political news website "Politico" and Reuters, U.S. President Trump revealed on February 7 that he will announce the implementation of reciprocal tariffs next week. Reuters commented that this "offensive" by Trump represents a "significant escalation" in the U.S. global trade relationship.

During a meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Trump stated, "I will announce next week the implementation of reciprocal trade so that we are treated equally with other countries; we are asking for neither more nor less."

Trump further emphasized that these tariff measures will apply to all countries, believing this is the only fair approach: "They charge us, we charge them. It's the same. I am considering going this route instead of imposing a uniform tariff."

Politico noted that Trump often mentions the higher tariffs foreign governments impose on American cars, such as complaining about the EU's 10% import tariff on cars, which is significantly higher than the U.S.'s 2.5%.

The report also mentioned that Trump had previously threatened to impose a uniform 10% or 20% tariff on all imported goods and had tasked the government with studying this possibility. On February 2, Trump indicated that he plans to impose tariffs on EU products soon and reiterated his dissatisfaction with the trade deficit between the U.S. and the EU, as well as the EU's insufficient imports of American cars and agricultural products.

Previously, the U.S. approach to imposing tariffs has faced widespread opposition, with public opinion generally believing that these tariff measures could negatively impact U.S. economic growth and ultimately hurt the U.S. itself. On February 3, Chuck Schumer, the Democratic leader of the Senate minority, stated that the Trump administration's tariff policy is "the stupidest trade war in history."
